MyQuotaBag is an independent app and is not affiliated with Hermès International or any of its affiliates. This page summarizes public reports from collectors and publishers. It is not verified fact and states no Hermès rule. Each boutique and country works differently and practices change. These are general observations shared without commitment. We do not claim that pre-spend exists or that any amount is required. Collectors describe bags going to established clients who buy over time, come back and build a relationship with their boutique. No outcome, offer or allocation is predicted or guaranteed.

How do online drops work on the Hermès website?

Hermès sells some bags on its website without publishing a schedule: collectors describe non-quota bags appearing at irregular times and selling out within minutes. The Birkin, Kelly and Constance are not among them, since Hermès says they are sold only in its stores.

Status: Reported · drops described by PurseBop (March 2023) and collectors; the store-only sale of the Birkin, Kelly and Constance is official (checked September 30, 2026); restock frequency unknown · As of 2026-09-30

Details and sources

The Hermès US website says its leather goods are sold in its stores and on its website (official, checked September 30, 2026). How often bags are added online is not published in the materials MyQuotaBag reviewed: unknown.

PurseBop described in March 2023 the “oops the item you requested is unavailable” message many buyers meet when a bag sells between the listing and the cart. It advised having an account and payment details ready. Collectors report that each country's website shows different pieces at different times.

Whether an online order counts toward pre-spend is disputed: see Does online Hermès spend count toward pre-spend?

Should I buy a Birkin from the boutique or on the resale market?

In a boutique you pay the retail price, but collectors report months of purchases and waiting first without choosing the exact bag; on the resale market you choose and buy at once, at a premium and with an authentication risk that depends on the seller.

Is a Birkin a good investment?

A Birkin has held its value well on the resale market, but it is not a dependable investment: Knight Frank's luxury index put Birkin and Kelly prices down 0.2% in 2025 and resale prices swing with size, color, leather and condition.

  • Resale. Rebag reports that Birkin resale values rose 92% since 2015 while retail prices rose 43% (2025 Clair Report).
  • Auction. Sotheby's reports an average of about US$22,300 for a Birkin 30 in 2025, up 6% on 2024 (September 2026).
  • Index. Knight Frank's Luxury Investment Index shows Birkin and Kelly prices down 0.2% over 2025 (April 23, 2026).

What is the most expensive Hermès bag ever sold?

Jane Birkin's original Birkin is the most expensive handbag ever sold at auction: Sotheby's sold it in Paris on July 10, 2025 for €8.58 million with fees, about US$10.1 million, to a collector in Japan.

Is the Hermès game worth it?

It can be, if you would enjoy the purchases anyway: the spending comes first and no amount of it leads to an offer for certain. Collectors who report regrets describe buying things they did not want for a bag that did not come.

Status: Reported · MyQuotaBag Data, PurseBop (2017, 2023), NBC News and Business of Fashion (2024); regrets from public collector discussions · As of 2026-09-30

Details and sources

In the reports MyQuotaBag holds, half of the offers came at a Purchase Ratio between 1.00:1 and 2.00:1 and some collectors report ratios above 3.00:1 without the bag they asked for. The Purchase Ratio is a personal reference, never a price of entry.

The pressure has reached a court: the 2024 lawsuit alleged that shoppers were steered toward shoes, scarves, belts, jewelry and home goods before being offered a Birkin (NBC News, March 21, 2024). Hermès has said it prohibits making a sale conditional on other purchases. A federal judge dismissed the complaint in September 2025 and the plaintiffs appealed.

PurseBop's advice has not changed since 2017: buy only what you love and decline a bag you do not love. Collectors who say the journey was worth it describe pieces they still wear and time in a boutique they enjoy.

How should I store and care for a Hermès bag?

Store a Hermès bag lightly stuffed with acid-free tissue in its dust bag, away from sunlight, heat and humidity, according to Sotheby's and PurseBop. Both also warn against plastic; PurseBop adds a warning against long contact with dark denim.

Status: Reported · Sotheby's (September 2025, September 2026) and PurseBop (March and October 2023); the Hermès care pages could not be read on October 3, 2026 · As of 2026-10-03

Details and sources
  • Shape. Sotheby's advises stuffing the bag lightly with acid-free tissue or bubble wrap and storing it flat on its back with a small support under the handles (September 15, 2025). PurseBop warns against overstuffing (March 20, 2023).
  • Dust bag and box. PurseBop advises keeping the bag in its original dust bag to protect it from light, dust and humidity. Sotheby's adds the box.
  • No plastic. PurseBop advises against plastic containers because leather needs to breathe and mold can build up inside. Sotheby's notes that plastic left on the hardware during long storage can trap humidity and discolor it.
  • Light. PurseBop says natural and artificial light can fade or discolor a bag, including sunlight through a car, train or airplane window.
  • Humidity and heat. PurseBop suggests no more than 30 to 40% humidity and a room kept between 60 and 75°F.
  • Color transfer. PurseBop warns that dye from denim and other dark clothing can transfer onto a light-colored bag worn on the shoulder or crossbody (October 12, 2023).
  • Rain. PurseBop advises drying any water at once with a soft absorbent cloth. Sotheby's describes Box leather as prone to water marks and advises keeping it out of the rain, while it calls Epsom water-resistant (September 10, 2026).

Sotheby's also suggests an insert to prevent press marks inside the bag and a twilly or other soft fabric around the handles to protect them from the oils of the hands.

How does the Hermès Spa repair service work?

You bring the piece to a Hermès boutique that offers repairs, it is assessed and you receive a cost estimate by email, usually with a time estimate, then you pay when you collect it, according to PurseBop. MyQuotaBag found no published prices or delays for the service.

Status: Reported · process described by PurseBop (December 2024, October 2022) and Sotheby's (September 2025); the Hermès care pages could not be read on October 3, 2026; cost, delay and acceptance of resale bags unknown · As of 2026-10-03

Details and sources
  1. Bring the bag to a Hermès boutique that offers repairs. PurseBop counted 38 such boutiques in the United States in December 2024.
  2. The boutique assesses the piece. If the work cannot be done locally, it is sent to Paris with your permission.
  3. You receive an estimate of the cost by email, usually with an estimate of the time needed.
  4. You are told by email when the piece is ready and you pay when you pick it up.

Spa is the collector name for this after-sales service. It works on the outside of a bag: zippers, stitching, handles, corners, hardware and the cleaning and conditioning of the leather. PurseBop and Sotheby's both say it does not clean or refurbish the interior.

Sources differ on how often to go. Sotheby's recommends a visit every few years so that small issues do not grow (September 15, 2025). PurseBop reports Hermès advice that a bag kept with care needs the Spa only when it shows wear or damage (October 16, 2022).

Cost and delay: unknown. No source MyQuotaBag could verify publishes prices or typical delays and collectors report wide ranges in public discussions. Whether the Spa accepts a bag bought on the resale market is not documented in the sources reviewed: unknown.

What affects the resale value of a Hermès bag?

Sotheby's names condition as the most important factor, then size, color, leather, construction and the year of the date stamp: small sizes, neutral or pastel colors, Togo and Epsom leathers and recent store-fresh bags resell highest. It ranks hardware as the least influential.

Status: Reported · Sotheby's (May 2024, October 2025, January 2026); the decline argument from PurseBop (April 2019) · As of 2026-10-03

Details and sources

ConditionThe single most important factor. Obvious wear such as scratched hardware or marked corners can make a Kelly 30% or more less expensive than one without wearJanuary 28, 2026; May 2, 2024
SizeSmaller bags resell higher: the Mini Kelly 20 and Birkin 25 lead, while sizes 30 and 35 trade 30 to 50% lower with all else equalOctober 14, 2025
ColorNeutrals and soft pastels perform best; bright reds and oranges have a more limited audienceOctober 14, 2025

Rarity sits apart: limited editions such as the Himalaya sell far above these ranges. For current figures, see What does a Birkin cost in a boutique, on resale and at auction?

Not every source describes a market that only rises. PurseBop argued in April 2019 that Birkin resale prices had declined and that many Hermès bags were selling at or below retail. See Is a Birkin a good investment?

Resale value is one measure among others. A bag you carry and enjoy is not a worse purchase because it would resell for less.

Do the box, receipt and dust bag matter when reselling?

Yes, above all for bags in top condition: Sotheby's says store-fresh bags with their box, accessories and plastic on the hardware fetch the highest premiums and that receipts support resale value. For a carried bag, Sotheby's still calls condition the single most important factor.

Status: Reported · Sotheby's (May 2024, September 2025, January and March 2026); receipt wording reported by PurseBop (December 2020) · As of 2026-10-03

Details and sources

Sotheby's defines store fresh as a pristine bag with its original box and the plastic still on the hardware and says such Kellys always cost more than the same bag once carried (May 2, 2024). It adds that completeness, including box, dust bag and receipt, can have a meaningful impact on desirability (March 26, 2026).

On receipts, Sotheby's advises keeping them along with service notes because documentation supports resale value and buyer confidence (September 15, 2025). PurseBop reported in December 2020 that Hermès receipts had stated since around July 2020 that a purchase is for personal use and not for resale for commercial purposes. PurseBop's reading was that a personal resale remains possible.

Your own records help as well. Keeping the receipt, the box, the dust bag and any Spa notes together, with a note of where and when you bought each piece, gives you the history a buyer or an auction house may ask for. It is worth doing whether or not you ever sell.

Do color and hardware change the resale value of a Birkin or Kelly?

One collector's analysis of about 23,400 US resale listings found that browns, blacks, grays and neutrals resell 3% to 6% above the average for the same bag, while pinks, yellows, reds and purples resell 7% to 10% below.

Status: Reported · one collector analysis published on Reddit (November 2025), read on 2026-10-03; method described, data not independently checked · As of 2026-10-03

Details and sources

The same author found almost no difference for hardware: gold about 0.8% above and palladium about 1.1% below, with rose gold higher on few listings. Color families are broad, rare colors are thin on the resale market and leathers are not separated. It is an observation by a third party, not buying or investment advice.
