Box calf is a smooth, glossy calfskin with a long, fine grain and a polished touch. Hermès says its name comes from the "Box" tanning technique born in England and that the house has used it since the 1920s. Annonay and Le Puy, two French tanneries known for box calf, now belong to Hermès. In 2023 the house said most of its leathers, Box included, come from calves raised in France.

Box is the leather of the vintage Kelly and of Constance bags that look better every decade. It marks at the slightest touch, then turns those marks into a deep, mirror-like patina.

Origin and history

Box is one of the oldest leathers in the house. Collectors attribute the name to an English bootmaker, Joseph Box; Hermès speaks of a tanning technique. Its acquisitions of the Annonay tannery (2013) and the Tanneries du Puy (2015), both box specialists, show how much the house values it. In 2018 Hermès reported renewed growth in smooth box calf, which it calls the house's iconic material. In 2022 it said colored Box had reached a new high.

Look and feel

Smooth, shiny and deep in tone, especially in black and Rouge H. It is firm, almost board-like, which suits structured bags such as the Kelly Sellier and the Constance.

How it wears

Scratches. Box marks at the slightest contact and the shine makes marks visible. Over the years they melt into a polished patina.

Water. The most constant warning: an unwiped raindrop can raise a blister. Hermès advises wiping water immediately to avoid blisters.

Shape. Rigid; it holds its form. Deep scratches and knocked corners are not always fully repairable.

Weight. One 2007 Birkin 35 weighed by its owner, as reported on a forum, came in at 1,049 g, the lightest calf leather in the set.

Patina. Considered one of the finest in the house: deeper and more luminous with every year.

Care

A soft, dry cloth, with another in your bag on humid days. Owners differ on creams: some apply a light neutral cream yearly, others use nothing; Hermès advises against commercial products not suited to its leathers. Professional polishing is part of how the patina forms.

Who it suits

Collectors, occasions and owners who enjoy watching a leather age. Several owners carry a Box Kelly almost every day and love the result.
