Hermès Lizard leather

Fine scales and deep color for the smallest bags.

Hermès uses two monitor lizards: Varanus salvator (bought in Malaysia) and Varanus niloticus, the Nile monitor. Their skins are small, so lizard is reserved for small bags and accessories: Kelly Pochette, Kelly Danse, Constance, Mini Kelly, Birkin 20 and 25. Salvator is often shown in an ombré that draws rings of color across the scales.

Origin and history

Hermès does not publish when it began using lizard; collectors cite a Kelly 32 from 2001 and an ombré Salvator Birkin 25 from 2007. The house reported strong growth in lizard sales in 2019 and 2022.

Look and feel

Very small scales, smooth or matte, with remarkable color depth.

How it wears

Scratches. Fairly resistant when cared for, but more delicate than crocodile, whose skin is thicker.

Water. Never. If water touches it, blot without rubbing lifted scales.

Scales. Whether scales lift is disputed: some small bags peel along one edge while vintage pieces stay intact. Dryness is the most cited risk.

Aging. Lizard loses its shine with handling; one owner says the spa could not restore it.

Care

A dry cloth in the direction of the scales. No creams or conditioners without a specialist's advice. Resellers suggest a spa visit every one to two years to prevent drying.

Who it suits

Collectors, evenings and small bags.

Frequently asked questions

Can I sell an Hermès lizard bag in California?

No. California has banned the sale of Ring lizard and Nile lizard products since 2022; a court upheld the ban in 2025.

Is lizard fragile?

It needs care: keep it dry and avoid creams. Well-kept pieces last for decades.
