Hermès Barenia leather
The saddle leather that heals its own scratches and writes its own story.

Barenia is the leather of Hermès saddles. Hermès says it was first tanned near the Alsatian village of Barr (which gave it its name) and calls it a "magical" leather: small scratches disappear when rubbed. It is smooth, light and famous for darkening and glowing where hands touch it. With Box and Vache Naturelle, the house classes it among its heritage leathers.
Barenia Faubourg, introduced in 2016, keeps the same character with a tiny printed grain that owners find hides scratches better. Hermès calls it more supple than Barenia and says it darkens most where it is exposed.
A few things worth knowing
- Barenia comes from saddlery; Hermès dates its arrival in the collections to the 1970s.
- Fauve with white saddle stitching is its signature look.
- A Barenia Birkin 30 weighed by its owner, as reported on a forum, came in at 754 g, the lightest of its size.
- In January 2026, a Birkin 25 in Barenia Faubourg was reported at US$15,100 at US boutiques, about 12% above Togo.

Origin and history
Hermès dates Barenia's arrival in its collections to the 1970s and does not say when it was first used on saddles. It appears on the Kelly Sellier, the Birkin and the Picotin Lock. Barenia Faubourg, named for the house's address at 24 Faubourg Saint-Honoré, followed in 2016 and appears on the Birkin, Kelly, Hac à Dos, Cab'H and Bolide Messenger.
Look and feel
Smooth and natural, with a soft sheen. In Fauve it shows the patina most clearly. Faubourg adds a minute grain that imitates a drummed one and feels softer.
How it wears
Scratches. A fingernail can mark it, but fine marks rub away. Deep ones remain.
Water. Disputed: some owners see drops vanish in half an hour, others keep permanent spots. Resellers call it water resistant; owners in rainy places are more cautious.
Grease. The real enemy: oil and hand cream leave permanent stains, more than water does.
Patina. The reference, with Box. It darkens where the hand passes and gains a deep glow over decades.
Faubourg. More resistant to visible scratches than smooth Barenia, with "ghost" marks after rubbing. Its tolerance of water is the most disputed point: one owner calls it allergic to water, another sees drops fade quickly.
Care
pH-neutral wipes, no spot cleaning, conditioner sparingly. A saddle balm protects but darkens the leather. Keep greasy hands and cosmetics away. One reseller even suggests powdering your nose before you smell your bag.
Who it suits
Patina lovers, collectors and daily users who accept marks as part of the story. If you want a bag that always looks new, Barenia is not for you.
Where the sources disagree
- Scratches and water. Resellers call it resistant; owners say it shows every mark at first. Both can be true: marks appear, then rub out and blend into the patina.
- Faubourg's introduction. 2016 for Hermès, 2017 in guides.
- Tanning. A popular guide describes a double tanning in nine oils over five to six weeks. A French tannery, Tanneries Haas, sells a leather under the registered name Barenia, double tanned with chrome and vegetable tannins and then greased. It does not say whether Hermès buys it and Hermès does not name its supplier.

Frequently asked questions
Do Barenia scratches go away?
Fine scratches usually rub away with a finger. Deep ones remain and blend into the patina over time.
What is the difference between Barenia and Barenia Faubourg?
Faubourg has a tiny printed grain: it shows fewer scratches and is softer, with a similar patina.
Can Barenia get wet?
Owners disagree. Wipe drops quickly and keep it away from grease, which marks it permanently.
