Hermès Vache Naturelle leather
Vegetable-tanned natural cowhide that turns from honey to brown and shows every story.

Vache Naturelle is natural cowhide, tanned entirely with vegetable tannins and given what Hermès calls an exceptionally transparent finish. The house classes it, with Box and Barenia, among its heritage leathers. It starts pale and darkens with light and touch, from honey to deep brown. Collectors say it comes only in natural and black.
A few things worth knowing

How it wears
Scratches. With Barenia, the leather that shows every mark.
Water. It takes water marks, dirt and grime. Some owners accept them as part of the patina; others avoid rain entirely. Whether water marks fade is disputed.
Patina. Its reason to exist: a slow change from pale honey to rich brown.
Care
A saddle balm darkens the leather and softens small marks but not large ones. Some owners apply a matte water repellent, tested under the bag first; others prefer to let it age untouched.
Who it suits
Patina lovers and collectors. Not for rainy climates.
Where the sources disagree
- Treatment. Whether to protect it from day one is the most debated question among owners.
- Water marks. Permanent for some, fading for others.

Frequently asked questions
Why does Vache Naturelle darken?
It is vegetable tanned with a transparent finish, so light, hand oils and time deepen its color.
Can Vache Naturelle get wet?
It marks easily. Wipe drops at once and avoid rain if you want an even patina.
