Hermès Doblis suede
Velvet in leather form, for dry days.

Veau Doblis is Hermès's suede: a calfskin sanded on the flesh side until it becomes velvety and shimmering. Hermès dates it to the 1930s. It is soft and silky to the touch and very sensitive to water. Collectors find it on the Jige Élan, on rare Birkins and Kellys and on the Teddy Kelly. A related suede with a longer nap, Grizzly, appeared in 2010.

Our take. These ratings are MyQuotaBag's editorial view, built from the sources listed below and from collectors' experience. They are not measurements. Resale versus Togo and share of listings are measured from public listings.
How it wears
Scratches. Marks brush out, but the nap wears at corners and edges with heavy use and looks bald and smooth.
Water. Best avoided. Some owners say a brushing after drying is enough and saw few marks.
Color. Light shades pick up dirt and dye from dark or raw denim; the transfer can be permanent.
Patina. No patina; the nap wears instead.
Care
A suede brush from time to time; keep it away from water, grease and dark clothing. Protective sprays are disputed: they often darken suede.
Who it suits
Collectors, dry seasons and small evening bags.
