A little hunting-bag history, made for hands-free days.
The Jypsière takes familiar Hermès details and gives them room to move. It has the straps and front closure you might associate with the Birkin, but it wears across the body like a messenger bag.
Introduced in 2008 during Jean Paul Gaultier's era at Hermès, it offers a quieter, more practical kind of luxury. For collectors who prefer to keep their hands free, that's a big part of its appeal.
A few things worth knowing
Sotheby's credits Jean Paul Gaultier with introducing the Jypsière in 2008.
Its design draws on traditional hunting bags and shares details with the Birkin family.
The original range included 28, 31, 34 and 37 cm; the Mini Jypsière followed in 2023.
Boutiques carry the style and some versions may appear online, subject to availability.

These are asking prices. They are what sellers ask on public listings, mostly in the United States, Europe and Asia, converted to US dollars. They include each seller's margin. Buyers often pay less: recent auction and resale reports put many bags between retail and about 30% below the asking prices seen here. The estimated sale price is a MyQuotaBag estimate, not a valuation of any bag.

Time on the market. How long a Jypsière listing stays online before it is withdrawn. A withdrawn listing does not necessarily mean the bag sold.
The Jypsière emerged during a period when Jean Paul Gaultier was bringing a playful energy to Hermès womenswear. The inspiration was a traditional hunting bag: something worn across the body, practical enough for movement and built to carry essentials securely.
Sotheby's places its introduction in 2008 and PurseBop identifies the Fall-Winter 2008 collection. The bag brought together a relaxed outdoor attitude and the house's recognizable leatherwork.
Familiar details, a new way to carry them
You can spot the relationship with the Birkin in the front straps and rotating closure. But the Jypsière has a broad flap and an adjustable shoulder strap. The result feels less like a top-handle statement bag and more like something made for walking, traveling and daily life.
A new audience for the Mini
In 2023, Hermès introduced the Mini Jypsière. Its compact scale gave the design a fresh presence without losing the messenger-bag spirit. For some collectors, it's an evening or weekend choice; for others, it is simply the right size for carrying less.
A new chapter with the Mini
Then, in 2023, Hermès introduced the Mini Jypsière.
It arrived as part of a broader movement. Since the Constance Elan in 2010, the house has been creating smaller versions of its classics, followed by the Mini Bolide in 2011 and the Mini Kelly in 2016. Sotheby's notes that the Mini Jypsière is seven centimeters smaller than the Jypsière 28 and holds the essentials, such as a phone and keys.
The Mini also reflects how many people carry less today. The trend toward small bags has been linked to slimmer phones, less cash and a more minimalist approach to fashion.
For the Jypsière, it meant a second life: the same hunting bag spirit, at a scale made for an evening out or a quick errand.
Where the sources disagree
Sizes made today: a 2024 source lists the Mini and all four traditional sizes; a 2026 collector guide says the 31, 34 and 37 have been discontinued.
Why collectors love it
Freedom to move
The Jypsière was designed to be worn. The strap leaves both hands free, while the flap protects what's inside. Larger versions have been made with padded shoulder support, a thoughtful detail when carrying a fuller bag for hours.
Less attention, plenty of character
The Jypsière is not as widely discussed as the Birkin or Kelly. Many collectors appreciate that. Its construction and hardware are recognizable to Hermès enthusiasts, but the overall shape is more understated.
The design
The Jypsière has a structured base, gently expanding side gussets and a broad flap. Leather straps, or sangles, cross the front and fasten through a rotating touret closure with the familiar small leather and metal fittings.
Inside, the bag is lined and provides more organization than some of Hermès' unlined styles. Collector descriptions of the Jypsière 28 include a zipped pocket and additional compartments for smaller belongings.
The shoulder strap is important to the design. On larger versions, it is typically leather, adjustable and removable, often with a padded shoulder section. The Mini usually has a fixed canvas strap, although seasonal variations exist.
Inside the bag
Open the flap and you will find a leather lining, unlike the unlined Evelyne or Picotin. The interior is divided, with a zipped pocket for a phone or a card holder.
On the Jypsière 28, PurseBop describes a zipped front pocket, a phone compartment and a slip pocket.
Sizes and versions
The traditional Jypsière appeared in 28, 31, 34 and 37 cm. The 28 is the compact everyday size; larger versions offer much more room and feel closer to the hunting bag that inspired them.
The Mini Jypsière, introduced in 2023, measures around 22 × 14.8 × 5.3 cm in the referenced collector guide. It is made for essentials rather than a full day's belongings.
The currently produced range is less certain. A 2024 source lists the Mini and all four traditional sizes, while a 2026 collector guide says the 31, 34 and 37 have been discontinued. Hermès does not publish a complete list in the supplied references, so availability should be checked with the brand in the relevant market.
Leathers and hardware
The Jypsière has often been made in Hermès calf leathers. Clemence gives larger bags a softer drape. Togo has a matte, visible grain. Swift is smooth and takes color beautifully, while Evercolor is supple with a fine grain and is frequently associated with the Mini.
Collectors may also encounter Evergrain, canvas combinations and occasional exotic versions. Gold and palladium are the most familiar hardware finishes, with rose gold appearing in selected examples.
The front closure is an important part of the bag's appearance, so even a change from gold to palladium can give the Jypsière a noticeably different mood.
How do you buy a Jypsière?
Jypsière models are offered through Hermès boutiques. Collector reports also describe occasional appearances on Hermès websites, where popular versions can sell quickly.
Availability varies by color, size and market. Hermès does not publish allocation rules and no purchase history or boutique relationship can guarantee a particular bag.
What does a Jypsière cost at retail?
Published retail references are limited in the supplied material. One July 2024 account placed the Mini Jypsière from SGD 11,900 in Singapore. That is a dated, market-specific reference, not a current international price. For the latest figure, check the relevant Hermès website or boutique.
The resale market offers another perspective on the Jypsière. Some collectors turn to it for a particular color or size; others to find pieces no longer offered in boutiques. Prices vary widely, which is why a single price rarely tells the whole story.
