Brief creation story
The story, in brief
This note has its own sources and limits. The inherited catalogue metadata elsewhere on this page remains provisional.
Voitures Exquises asks what happens when a collection is treated as a game rather than a fixed arrangement. Hermès credits Jan Bajtlik and links the design to the horse-drawn vehicles at Łańcut Castle in Poland. In the house’s account, the artist selected twenty carriages, divided them into halves and recombined them. It compares the method to the Surrealists’ exquisite-corpse game, with vehicles taking the place of bodies.[1]
The same account says that folding the scarf can reunite the matching halves. This makes manipulation part of the design’s idea: the reader does not only identify a carriage but can help restore it. The description appears on a Twilly adaptation and explicitly refers back to the scarf design, so the folding invitation should be understood in that original square-format context.[1]
The artistic pleasure is in the interval between recognition and mismatch. A carriage can remain legible even after its familiar order has been disturbed. Rather than freezing transport history into a solemn procession, the design offers an experiment in how much an image can change before it becomes something else.

Documentary context
Łańcut Castle Museum’s own account records Hermès-made harnesses in its tack room.
Adds a museum-origin fact about the named source collection; does not independently establish the scarf’s twenty-carriage selection.
