Brief creation story

The story, in brief

This note has its own sources and limits. The inherited catalogue metadata elsewhere on this page remains provisional.

Alice Shirley’s Rewilding Nature takes its starting point from landscapes allowed to recover. Hermès connects the design to experimental sites she visited in the United Kingdom. Its account identifies four environments, one for each corner of the scarf: woodland, coast, heath and a freshwater glade. The subject is not simply an inventory of attractive plants and animals, but the return of wildlife and the reintroduction of species to places from which they had disappeared.[1]

That distinction offers a useful way into the design. Rather than treating nature as a finished arrangement, the story invites us to think about change, coexistence and the unexpected life that follows when people loosen their control. The scarf’s square can be read as a meeting place for different habitats, not a claim that the natural world is orderly or complete.

The documented 90-format version is silk twill with hand-rolled edges, made in France. Hermès credits Shirley directly on this product page; those manufacturing details describe this version, not every object that carries the title.[1]

Documentary context

WWF-UK describes rewilding as restoring natural processes while reducing human management, although some approaches begin with active intervention.

Do not suggest endorsement, partnership, a specific conservation result, or a site visited by Shirley.
