Brief creation story

The story, in brief

This note has its own sources and limits. The inherited catalogue metadata elsewhere on this page remains provisional.

Two rearing horses face one another in Hermès’ description of Les Chevaux Déchaînés by Octave Marsal. At first, their symmetrical silhouettes are said to resemble pencil drawing. Closer attention reveals a different construction: buckles, chains, stirrups and straps make up the lines themselves. Equipment associated with the horse has become the material from which its image is assembled.[1]

Hermès connects these small components to travelling-sales catalogues in the Émile Hermès collection. The account is published with a tie and expressly concerns the original scarf design. It therefore provides a documented explanation of the motif without making the tie’s dimensions, material or cropped arrangement stand for every version of the work.[1]

The change of scale is the compelling idea. A viewer can read an animal at one moment and a succession of objects at the next. Neither reading cancels the other. The drawing turns the relationship between horse and harness into a visual puzzle, asking how separate things can gather into a living presence without losing their individual identities.
