Brief creation story

The story, in brief

This note has its own sources and limits. The inherited catalogue metadata elsewhere on this page remains provisional.

La Selle Imaginaire begins with a real object and deliberately moves away from it. Jan Bajtlik identifies a saddle with leopard hair in the Émile Hermès collection as one source of inspiration. He is equally clear that the saddle in his design does not reproduce a particular existing example. Instead, parts drawn from different saddles meet realistic details and abstract inventions.[1][2]

The artist describes the result as closer to an abstract painting than a straightforward image of a saddle. His project page identifies the original work as gouache on watercolour paper. Hermès adds another small invitation to look closely: a portrait of Bajtlik’s dog, Kluska, is concealed in the design. The public object and the artist’s private companion therefore share the same imaginative space.[2][1]

The interest here is transformation rather than reconstruction. A familiar working object becomes a framework in which shapes can cease to behave as equipment. Knowing the starting point helps, but the design need not resolve into a technically plausible saddle. Its freedom rests precisely in leaving that question open.
