Brief creation story
The story, in brief
This note has its own sources and limits. The inherited catalogue metadata elsewhere on this page remains provisional.
Grand Tralala belongs to a continuing conversation between the harness and the drawn line. In its essay Drawing the harness, Hermès names Virginie Jamin’s scarf as one way in which equestrian equipment has been reinterpreted. The accompanying caption dates the illustrated scarf to 2021. That is a useful point of reference for this particular documented object, rather than proof of every edition or adaptation.[1]
The essay considers the harness as both functional and aesthetic: leather straps organise a horse’s movement while also shaping its appearance. It presents the passage from horse to harness to drawing as a source of continuing invention. Within that account, Grand Tralala is not an isolated borrowing but an example of an older practical vocabulary becoming available to an illustrator.[1]
This offers a restrained way to read the design without inventing details of its composition. The creative question is how a drawing can retain the associations of useful equipment while releasing it from use. The harness can then become a subject for attention, rhythm and imagination, rather than something understood only through the task it performs.
