Brief creation story

The story, in brief

This note has its own sources and limits. The inherited catalogue metadata elsewhere on this page remains provisional.

Two horses bring ancient Greece into conversation with Parisian engineering in Chevaux d’Hephaistos. Hermès describes Elias Kafouros’s paired horse heads as part of a curling form inspired directly by the structure of the Eiffel Tower. Within the artist’s imagined story, their maker is Hephaestus, the Greek god associated with blacksmithing and metallurgy. The connection is a creative proposition, not a claim that the tower or the horses have an ancient origin.[1]

Metal is the bridge between these worlds. A modern structure supplies the design’s architectural idea, while a mythological maker gives that structure an imagined life. The result can be read as a meeting of drawing and fabrication: the horse becomes a way to think about how something is assembled, as well as what it represents.

Hermès Macau records reference H004365S 03 in Crème / Vert / Marron Glacé. This version is a French-made carré 90 in silk twill, finished with hand-rolled edges and measuring approximately 88.5 by 88.5 centimeters. Its specifications do not establish the motif’s first edition.[1]

First-edition year: not established by these sources.
