Brief creation story

The story, in brief

This note has its own sources and limits. The inherited catalogue metadata elsewhere on this page remains provisional.

Cheval Punk began with a small object made for writing. In an interview published by Hermès, Daiske Nomura recalls discovering a horse-shaped pen-cleaning brush in the Émile Hermès collection. Its mane formed the brush itself. To him, that crest suggested a mohawk and an equestrian object acquired the attitude of a punk character. The leap from a practical detail to a personality gives the design an unusually tangible starting point.[1]

The background grew through conversation. Nomura credits Christophe Goineau with suggesting tartan, drawing on his knowledge of music and punk culture. Rather than presenting creation as a solitary flash of inspiration, the interview lets us follow an exchange: an object catches the artist’s eye, a resemblance becomes an idea and a colleague helps give that idea its setting.[1]

Hermès’s Ginza art guide also records a framed paper print of the carré design, naming Nomura as its artist. Seen in that documentary context, Cheval Punk belongs to the life of a drawing as well as to the life of a scarf.[2]
