Brief creation story

The story, in brief

This note has its own sources and limits. The inherited catalogue metadata elsewhere on this page remains provisional.

Jan Bajtlik turns an art academy into an unlikely travelling community. In his account of Academia Hippica, the school occupies a horse-shaped glass building on enormous wheels. Its students are animals; their common subject is the horse. The artist links this imagined institution to his own experience of art school, giving the elaborate fantasy a recognisable beginning in everyday student life.[1]

Bajtlik describes departments ranging from painting and sculpture to photography, ceramics and typesetting. Classes spill outside, while the curriculum makes room for invented activities alongside familiar artistic techniques. The students do more than work: some sleep, eat or look at their phones. His description allows the academy to remain a place of distraction and mishap, rather than an immaculate monument to achievement.[1]

Read this way, the design is an affectionate picture of learning. Its equestrian theme provides a common language without requiring every participant to think alike. The attraction lies in that balance: a school with an unmistakable identity, populated by individuals whose attention keeps wandering beyond the lesson.

First-edition year: not established by these sources.
