This story is limited to the evidence below; it does not verify every version of the design.

For Merveilleuses lanternes, Hermès locates the starting point in its own collection of objects. According to the maison, Pierre Marie noticed a recently restored carriage lantern during a visit to the Émile Hermès collection. Its ornament interested him; forty-four further, distinct lanterns then supplied material for a composition organised along diagonals. The source describes an encounter with historical craftsmanship, followed by an imaginative alteration of it, rather than a literal inventory.[1]

Each lantern becomes a setting for an equestrian scene. Hermès names horses, seahorses and chimeras, some arranged like a carousel, some standing alone and others accompanied by riders. Read through that description, the design moves between the practical carriage lamp and a small theatre of invention. The account is available on an official Twilly page that explicitly says it is based on the scarf design. That link supports the relationship between motif and adaptation, but the ribbon’s 5 × 86 cm dimensions should not be assigned to the exported 90 cm square.[1]

The design identity and correspondence of individual versions remain unconfirmed. Separate publishers do not demonstrate independent historical dating. Search-index evidence excluded from usable opened-source count; affected statements must remain internal leads. A second distinct usable evidence origin is not established for this entry. Longer primary-based account is possible after pruning, but the extra seller text repeats the maison and is not an independent second witness.
